    Genre and style

   

    Evil Islands complements to the most recent, state-of-the-art genre of

    the 3D role-playing strategy, amplifying it with the brand-new, unique

    options. "Many publicists claim to have the most realistic,

    state-of-the-art 3D product around. But Russian developer Nival

    Interactive is putting something together that may not need much

    exaggeration. In September 2000, the Strategy-oriented role-playing

    game Evil Islands will rear its beautiful head", - Adrenaline Vault.

   

    The game puts players in command of a smaller battle party, its

    members truly individual due to the universal characters development

    system enriched with a nearly hundred of additional perks, in a

    dynamic, fully interactive environment found in best of role-playing

    games. Evil Islands offers players a wide variety of strategies to

    achieve quest objectives and defeat their enemies depending on

    characters' skills, gear and equipment.

   

    Storyline

   

    Your main character awakens among ancient ruins amidst a wild,

    seemingly deserted land named Gipath - one of the islands floating in

    the astral halo. Who is he and how has he arrived here? All that his

    memory managed to retain is a vision of a tiny winged creature, which

    disappeared as soon as he fully regained conscience. How is he to

    survive and reach someone who could unveil the mystery of his lot and

    personality? He is not tough, and his light clothes can hardly be

    called an armor. His weapons are but a small hunting knife and a

    couple of easy spells. The most important task now is to find people.

    Then - just see what happens...

   

    You will find people whose reasons and true intentions are far from

    obvious. At first, your primary challenge is to win respect among the

    local populace, get more power and experience. However, soon the flow

    of events gains dashing speed. It becomes obvious that there is no

    time left to consider your private needs - dozens of foul friends and

    open foes are on your way, and performing your tasks requires more and

    more endurance, dexterity and wit. Eventually you find yourself

    entangled in a complex detective story, where your life is often at

    stakes. Around you are mysterious ancient ruins and monuments, deep

    caves and skillfully carved dungeons, rivers and lakes - an immersive

    but dangerous world, where you cannot feel at ease for a moment. And

    this is only the beginning of your journey...

   

    Your character is as natural and human-like as could be. He is neither

    possessed by evil, nor he is a world savior. His intentions are not

    always noble and self-denying, especially when his life is in

    question. He will meet unthinkable cruelty and unusual kindness,

    outrageous treachery and selfless loyalty. Naturally, he will not

    escape a love affair. Fate is going to test his ability to survive,

    fight, and find the way out of the most tangled coincidence every day.

   

    The world of Evil Islands

   

    The story unfolds in a world, which in the times of lore has split

    into separate islands, now isolated in the dark, insatiable astral

    halo. This universe is packed with unsolved enigmas, tangled problems

    and perilous adventures. You might already know some facts of its dark

    history from the Rage of Mages series. Perhaps, you have taken part in

    some events. This time, the scene is laid on the three new islands -

    Gipath, Ingos and Suslanger.

   

    First, you will learn to survive in this creepy, mysterious world. Be

    patient and get ready to the most unexpected turns. There is no one

    and nothing you can trust. Rely on your own strength and intuition.

    Your path goes through snow-clad mountain slopes and burned deserts,

    gloomy dungeons and primeval forests. Prepare to face the danger when

    the daylight smoothly gives place to the pitch-dark night, the rain

    starts pouring down, or the poisonous fog stands on your way.

   

    The Evil Islands realms are so thickly populated with various

    bloodthirsty creatures that you could not help being pleasantly

    surprised. Creeping and flying, biting and slashing, magnificent and

    repulsive, tiny and huge - they behave differently in different time

    of the day and weather. Remember, that a "strong monster" in Evil

    Islands is not just a word: even one of them can be a serious obstacle

    on your way. You will have to put together your strength, skill, and

    wits to overcome it.

   

    Gipath

   

    Gipath, where your journey will start, reminds of the Middle Europe in

    summer. Do not be mislead by the visual beauty and peace, but beware:

    the vile and cunning inhabitants of Gipath are unpredictable! Trolls

    and goblins, bats, wolves, boars, hares and deer do not brook

    strangers lightly. Admire the succubi - they would have been

    magnificent in their naked 3D splendor, if it was not for their nasty

    temper, which must be well known to you. More than once you will have

    to descend into the natural caves and man-made dungeons. Some of their

    inhabitants, who never faced either the sun or a living human, will

    stay for long in your memory, if you will be lucky to get outside, of

    course...

   

    Gipath is a desolate land, which belongs to no country. It is mainly

    populated by Goblins, Orcs and other beings hostile to humans. The

    only human settlement is very small and constantly under a threat of

    calamity. An occasional visitor could also come across a settlement of

    the outlaw brigands, who somehow manage to get along with the wilder

    population of the island. Metal is not known here; people make their

    weapons from ivory and stone, and their armor from animal skins.

    Remnants of an unknown ancient civilization are scattered all around

    the island. Gipath is a fairly small and out-of-the-way land packed

    with crowds of hostile monsters, of no interest to any of the world's

    large empires.

   

    Ѕania Empire once planned to expropriate the island and had even built

    an outpost fortress here, but the disastrous splitting of the world

    left the fortress to its inhabitants' own discretion. Some of their

    descendants still live here, constantly fighting against goblins and

    orcs for survival.

   

    Ingos

   

    The landscapes of Ingos are snowy foothills, which resemble Middle

    Ages Europe in winter. Woody highlands take major part of the island,

    where dales and groves with sunny clearings grow into dense

    impenetrable forests. The thick coat of snow covers almost the entire

    island.

       

    Ingos is part of Cania Empire; its territory is quite large, although

    very scarcely populated. Woody hills occupy major part of the island.

    The weather is rather cold; the snow falls early in the autumn and

    stays for the most part of the year. There are no big cities; even the

    capital of Ingos looks like a big bustling village with curved narrow

    streets and two- or three-storied wooden houses. The rest of the

    settlements proudly bearing the name of cities look still more like

    overgrown villages.

   

    The local populace makes the living by cutting wood, mining ore and

    gold, and hunting. People usually live in small groups and are

    suspicious to strangers. The citizens of Ingos are self-reliant and

    freedom-loving; they are always ready to take up arms in defense of

    their interests without much thinking. The highest local authority is

    the Elder Counsel, but its power is far from being absolute: the

    province has a great deal of independence, and the Elder Counsel

    seldom intervenes in the local affairs. As a result, each village has

    a law of its own.

   

    Suslanger

   

    The arid and desolate Suslanger will please necromancy fans - these

    barren lands virtually swarm with evil magic offsprings. The admirers

    of deep gloomy dungeons packed with vile and slimy unthinkable

    monsters will also find this land very appealing.

   

    Suslanger is a sun-burnt desert. This small land belongs to the

    Hadagan Empire. It is divided into two parts: the relatively fertile

    lowlands and the barren highlands. An enormous Canyon with a river at

    the bottom cuts through the highlands. The land suitable for living

    and farming is very rare. The river and a small lake where it flows

    are the only sources of water on the entire island. To extend the

    farming lands, people have to build dams and canals. Few human

    settlements huddle around the lake. The desert is bare and

    non-populated by people. Instead, there live several orcish tribes,

    which are strong and skilled enough to coexist with Hadaganian

    settlers, and smart enough not to provoke humans for a full-scale war.

    Hadagan authorities are cruel and ruthless. Numerous guards punish for

    even the smallest deviation from Emperor's decrees, while spies and

    eavesdroppers report on every suspicious person. Suslanger is not of

    much economic importance to Hadagan, although it is the home for a

    well-known military academy. Many of this academy's alumni occupy high

    posts in the imperial army.

   

    Gameplay

   

    Evil Islands is a perfectly balanced blend of mind-blowing

    hack-and-slash action with a need for cautious, crafty strategic

    planning. Moving freely between fabulously scenic and diverse game

    areas, players do battle in command of smaller, potent parties of

    heroes wielding both magical and fighting skills, in a truly

    interactive role-playing environment. The course of events unrolls

    with fatal speed to carry player away to dazzling adventure full of

    treacheries and guile snares. However, player's fate is in his or her

    own hands: every item gained on the plains and highlands of the realms

    of Evil can be taken to the hometown and reassembled to create unique

    enchanted armor and weapon or unparalleled magic spells.

   

    Graphics and Music

   

    Everything in the game is true 3D. Unique smooth 3D objects change and

    morphing technology, procedural texturing, and texture preprocessing

    allows a whole bunch of new opportunities. See characters' shoulders

    grow right in the course of the game as their skills develop; admire

    soft shadows cast by trees and mountains; gape at wounds and grazes as

    they appear on characters' bodies and armor when they are hurt; and

    feel the easy grace of levitating creatures as their loose garments

    flutter in the wind.

    Each of the three islands in the game have unique architecture and art

    style incorporating elements of native art of the Southeastern and

    Northern Europe, South America and Ancient Egyptian. Muck and mire of

    the fens, glittering snowy mountains, sunlit grassland and dank,

    gloomy dungeons make an overwhelming abundance of detail, enhanced

    with the additional effects of mist, rain and smooth day/night change.

    The original, fully interactive electronic-symphonic ambient music

    enriched with ancient Scandinavian, Celtic and Irish tunes, is

    professionally recorded in MP3-files. More than 1000 environmental

    sounds and noises reflect game events, time of the day and year.
